What is the historical significance of one major event, place or person in Canadian history?

You must choose an event, person or place related to Canadian history in the 20th or 21st century. Here are a few examples you can choose from:

  • Spanish Influenza in Canada
  • Winnipeg General Strike
  • The Persons Case (1929)
  • Medicare in Canada
  • The 60's Scoop
  • 1972 summit series
  • Toronto Bathhouse Raids
  • Quebec Referendum
  • Meech Lake Accord
  • Idle No More Movement
  • National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
  • Donovan Bailey
  • Baltej Singh Dhillon
  • Justin Trudeau

You can propose your own topic but must seek instructor permission before starting your research.

Instructions

  • You can submit your research project as an independent essay or as a presentation. Presentations can be completed individually or in pairs. Presentations will be delivered in class in week 12.
  • The successful completion of the research project includes 1) completing the Moodle tutorial “historical significance” 2) participating in a library workshop in week 9, 3) attending a 1-to-1 consultation with a librarian in week 10 and submitting your research project in week 11.

Essay Format

  • Length: 3-4 pages typed (approx. 800 words) or 8 minute solo presentation/ 15 minute pair presentation
  • Font: 12-point, Times New Roman, double-spaced
  • Sources: the minimum requirements include the course textbook, and 3 additional sources of your choosing
  • Citations: footnotes and work cited required in Chicago format
  • Submit: on Moodle by 11.59pm on the due date
  • Late Penalty: 2% per day for 6 days, no submissions 1 week past the due date

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to explore the history and historical significance of one person, place or event in Canada's history in the 20th or 21st century. Your goal is establish a clear statement of historical significance based on the definition provided in the Moodle tutorial "Historical Significance."

For the librarian consultations in week 10 complete the following steps:

  • Come any time the library is open during Week 10 (8:30-5 weekdays, 8:30-4 on Saturday)
  • Any library staff member can help you except our student employee
  • Please tell the librarian you are from Meghan’s HIST 120 class and you are here for a 1-on-1 consultation
  • Give the librarian your student number
  • You are also welcome to email library@columbiacollege.ca and set up a Teams consultation instead.

  • 6: Discussion/Scholarly Support
  • 2: Critical Thinking/argument
  • 2: Focus / Structure and clarity of writing
  • 2: library tutorial and 1-to-1 library consultation
