I'm working on a film writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Pick 1 one of the 3 Discussion Questions to answer in your post. Indicate the question you are answering in your post title. The first person to respond to Questions 1 or 2 should start a new thread and subsequent posts should reply to this thread if possible. Question 3 posts will have varied topics and thus can start their own thread.

Question 1: Timeless vs. Contemporary

Elena operates on at least 2 different registers: the timeless and the contemporary. In various ways, the film's imagery points to timeless questions about our relationship to others and right vs. wrong. At the same time, the film is also deeply contemporary, exploring specific issues in contemporary Russia. Discuss these different registers and their interaction.

Question 2: Comparison

Compare and contrast one aspect of Elena with another film we've watched. You can focus on technical aspects, such as the length of the shot, the soundtrack, the pacing, etc. Or, you can focus on some aspect of the content, for instance the representation of generational struggle, the representation of class, the family, or the female protagonist. You can pick one motif (such as the train, for instance) that runs across the 2 films and compare its use and function.

Question 3: Open Topic

Write a post about a topic of your choice. You can focus on the film's technical achievements and challenges, or discuss themes, the soundtrack, scenes or visual motifs, among some possible topics.
