I sit here thinking about how to answer this question there is a lot of things going through my mind. I never in a million years would have thought that I would be completing the BSN program. For many years I have never put another thought into obtaining the degree. I was very happy where I was in my clinical area, and I thought I would retire there. Boy was I wrong. I have learned that things are constantly changing sometimes for the good other times for the bad. We as nurses and all health professionals need to be resilient and open to change. I believe that the last almost 2 years has taught all of us a thing or two. The BSN program opened my eyes to the importance of change and how it benefits not only the patients but also the nurses and staff.
The change project also was a great learning experience and taught us the importance of change and patient safety. Change is required to see improvement yet not all change leads to improvement. In order to continuously improve the individuals, groups or organizations must have the ability to develop, test and implement changes ("Institute for Healthcare Improvement," 2022). The facility where I work has a unit-based practice council. We meet monthly and discuss plans and ideas to implement changes to help with our HCAPS scores and increase patient safety on the unit. I am ashamed to say that years ago I never really had gotten involved with these types of groups. Now that we have completed the step-by-step process of the change project, I feel more comfortable participating in these group projects. One of the biggest challenges that I feel being a floor nurse for so long is I’m a little out of touch with some things. I rely on the younger nurses to teach me a thing or two. So, I guess in short, even though I was never going to go and get my BSN, here I am. It has taught me that change is good; growth is good, and it opens the doors to so many other avenues that I could venture to.
