For this assignment, you are going to choose a speech, essay, some type of non-fiction, a Ted-Talk, a commercial, or a print advertisement and write a 1000 word (this should be about four pages typed, double spaced, 12-point font) rhetorical analysis essay.  You may use anything that is on the Potential Works for Rhetorical Analysis page in Module 3 or find and use something else that you like as long as you get it approved by me.  Your introduction for this essay should do the following:

  1. Introduce the subject matter in the work
  2. Introduce the title and author of the work and give the context (date and place if applicable)
  3. State the author’s purpose
  4. Give a brief summary/description of the work (2-3 sentences)
  5. State how effectively the author’s purpose is accomplished
  6. State how you know #5 (this should be through the author/speaker/creator, etc. use of logos, pathos, ethos and/or some (no more than three or four) of the rhetorical strategies (see the handout).

The body should be comprised of several 8-point paragraphs that discuss one of the following:

  1. The rhetorical strategies the author(s)/creator(s) uses to try and accomplish his/her/their purpose; OR
  2. The author(s)/creator(s) use of logos, pathos, and ethos to try and accomplish his/her/their purpose

OR

  1. How the author(s)/creator(s) used rhetorical strategies to accomplish his/her/their logos, pathos, ethos.

Finally, you should have a conclusion paragraph that gives your final thought on the work and the subject matter.

You can use the pages at the Rhetorical Analysis chapter in EA to help you in writing your paper. Everything should be formatted according to MLA style guidelines (chps. 20-22 EA), and you should have a Works Cited page on a separate page after the end of the paper.  This should have one source—the source you analyzed in your paper.

In two well-developed paragraphs, discuss what you chose to do in your rhetorical analysis and at least three main points you plan to make about it by the due date on Thursday
