1.Formulating a Research Question

In preparation for upcoming assignments, post a draft of your qualitative research question supported with literature.

Before posting, review the following publication on connecting research methodologies:

  • Babbie, E. R. (2017). The basics of social research (7th ed.). Cengage.
    • Chapter 10, "Qualitative Field Research," pages 295–330.

Altermatt, Bill. (2008, January 3). Evaluating research: How can you tell the good research from the bad? https://psych.hanover.edu/classes/ResearchMethods/…

  • Does your research question show qualities similar to the good examples in this resource?
  • Does your research question show qualities similar to the bad example in the resource?

The research question should clearly imply the methodological approach to be used in seeking answers to the question. Include references to literature in support of your question. Refer to the Vila Heath: Formulating a Research Question media presentation for guidance.

2. Evaluating Qualitative Research Questions

For this discussion evaluate the qualitative research questions within a qualitative HAC article (Ventilator-acquired Pneumonia) if it was a qualitative article. If not, find a different one on the same topic. Consider the alignment of theory, problem, purpose, research questions, and design. You will also identify the type of qualitative research design the authors used and explain how it was implemented. Use the following checklist to help guide your evaluation.

Qualitative Research Question Checklist

  • Does the purpose statement fit logically with the problem statement? Does the purpose statement use similar words to the problem statement, or does it seem to address a different topic?
  • Do the research questions align with the method and design of the study?
  • Do questions seek to describe responses to the variables described in the study? For instance, are words like perception used that would automatically reject a quantitative study?
  • Do the questions begin with the word why?
  • Does the question focus on a single phenomenon?
  • Does the question include exploratory verbs?
  • Is the language nondirectional?
  • Are the questions open ended?

Do the questions specify the participants and research site?
