How do you do it?

  1. Choose someone whom you know but not someone in the same household as you. In the remainder of this assignment, I will call this person the participant. Explain to them the nature of the assignment and ask if they will participate. Explain to them that you will be handing in their photographs and your analysis of the discussion that you have with them, but that their identity will not be revealed, and that no one but your classmates and professor will see the photos or read your analysis of the interviews. In addition, indicate that no one else will hear the recorded interview (more on this below), and that you will erase the recording within two weeks of making it. If they do not consent, then choose another participant.
  2. Ask your participant to take photos of their most favorite and their least favorite pieces of technology that they use in the home. Ask them to take two photos of each object: one from close up, so that the details of the technology can clearly be seen, and another from farther away so that we can see the context of use. If they use the technology in multiple locations, have them take pictures of it within the setting of most frequent use.
  3. Interview this person at a time and location that is mutually agreeable; it need not be in their home.  You may use Zoom.  Remind them that you will be audio recording this interview as an aid to your memory. Make sure that your audio recorder works. The idea is to have a conversation about the participant's use of these technologies and their feelings about this use.For each item, use the following questions as a guide, and make frequent reference to the photographs.
    • Describe this item.
    • What do you use it for, and how do you use it?
    • Why is this your most/least favorite technological item that you use in the home? Why?
    • What is your most salient memory concerning the use of this item?
    • Are there times when this item doesn't work as you think it should? If so, how do you work around this?
    • If you could, what would you change about this object? What would you keep the same?
  4. While they are talking, take notes of the main points that they are making using pen/pencil and paper.
  5. Obtain digital copies of the photographs that they took.

What do you submit?

Include two items:

  1. Your Photo Elicitation paper
  2. Reflection on the differences between notes and memory

PHOTO ELICITATION PAPER

Make sure to keep your participant's name anonymous, but give their approximate age and gender, and whether they are a family member, a close friend, or an acquaintance.

Your writeup should include 3 parts:

  1. a brief description of the objects chosen
  2. summary of their responses to the interview/discussion that you had with them
  3. analysis

First, try to do write up your review relying only on your memory and your notes.

After you have done this, check what you have written against the audio recording, and revise your writeup as needed.

Except for the use of small illustrative quotes, don't reproduce the discussion verbatim. .

REFLECTION

Finally, write a paragraph on the difference between using the audio recording in the writeup and relying on your memory and notes.

How will I measure (grade) it?

When assessing, I will look for . . .

  1. Completion — did you include everything: the writeup, the photos, and the reflection?
  2. Description — did you write in a way that brings the experience to life?  Did you help your reader grasp the interviewee's perspective?  Did YOU demonstrate understanding?
  3. Analysis — after describing did you pull it apart to look deeper?

Steven:  The other year or so I got mad at the tv when the falcons lost in the conference finals, and I threw the remote at the T: V.

Steven:  Sometimes when the remote starts to not work I run around the house and look for batteries bu5t VI realizer I am just not using the remote properly.

Steven:  If I could change something I would make it equipped with Velcro.

Steven:  The Alexa video screen is the best thing I have its amazing at remnd9ng me of things and showing me what I need to do for the week.

Steven:  This item is the most favorite thing because it does so much that relate s to MH eve heyday life. It shows me my appointments and it plays my favorite songs.

Steven:  Sometimes when I am taking to my wife Alexa starts to talk instead of her.

Steven:  I would change how it responds to normal conversation and put in a code word to get it to act upon my commands.

Even within the fight level of tech er still find reasons to complain about the etched. I think that the only tech we will be happy with is something that we create ourselves.

His most favorite object is an Xbox console. It is white with a black circle on the top with a penny sized button that lights up. His least favorite object are Raycon earbuds. They are wireless earbuds through bluetooth and are black with a gray circle in the middle.

The Xbox was his most favorite because he had been playing on it for a very long time and he has had a lot of fun. Although it is his favorite he wishes he could change how powerful the system is and wishes that the games would run smoother. He really enjoys that it is a decent size and it is not too big. When his games freeze or when the wifi is not working he usually restarts his console. The Raycon earbuds are his least favorite because one earbud does not work although they are brand new. He was at the airport when he was trying to connect his earbuds and he noticed that the mic was not working when he was on a call and one of the earbuds would not connect even though it was charged. He wishes that the earbud would have worked and although the Raycons are his least favorite he enjoys the quality of the audio.

I can see why the Xbox would be his favorite piece of technology. It is something that he has been using for a long period of time and has come familiar with how it works and the things he can do on it. He is able to enjoy his time off playing his favorite video games with his friends online. In order to play online he has to be connected to the internet and at times the wifi starts to work slower and it ruins the gaming experience since the games quality goes down and at times it freezes. When this happens he restarts his console in hopes that with a reboot the console will grasp a better connection. He has been playing on the Xbox since he was a child and he had had a great experience with it yet there are things he wishes he could change. He wishes he could have a more powerful CPU (Central processing unit) to be able to run his games more smoothly. Trying to play games with others requires you to be able to load the game as fast as them and it is more fun when you have good quality that way you can experience the game together.

The fact that one Raycon earbud does not work is a big factor in why it is his least favorite piece of technology. In order to enjoy using the earbuds he would like to be able to use both at the same time to be able to hear his audio. They were brand new when he got them and he expected them to both be working and when he was waiting at the airport for a flight he wanted to listen to music and he tried connecting the earbuds through bluetooth one would not connect. He was on a call and he tried using the one earbud that was working but the mic was not picking his voice up well and the other person was not able to hear him well. He has now opted out of using the Raycon earbuds and instead he uses his wired earbuds. Although they are his least favorite, he enjoyed the quality of the audio he got. He wishes the other earbud would work so he can enjoy both at the same time.

It was a bit harder to remember what was said in our conversion. I found that I was sort of blanking when I tried to remember what he said. I was trying to remember the order of the questions that way I knew what I had to write but I could not remember. I started writing like five minutes after our conversation and I was having a hard time remembering what had been said. After I did my initial write up I realized I missed a couple of points I had wroten done. I have never had the best memory so it did take me a while to finish my initial write up.
