Operational art and the operational design methodology enables a commander
and staff to understand the operating environment, define problems and
develop an operational approach to solve problems and use these concepts
during JPP.
The CCDR and staff, with input from subordinate commands and supporting
commands and agencies, prepare a strategic estimate by analyzing and
describing the political, military, economic, social, information, and
infrastructure factors and trends, and the threats and opportunities that
facilitate or hinder achievement of the objectives over the timeframe of the
strategy.
The JFC and staff develop plans and orders through the application of
operational art and operational design in conjunction with JPP. They combine
art and science to develop products that describe how (ways) the joint force
will employ its capabilities (means) to achieve military objectives (ends),
given an understanding of unacceptable consequences of employing
capabilities as intended (risk).

Assignment:
Analyze the concepts and theories you read about in J300; utilizing key
language and terms from these concepts and theories, analyze the operational
art and design concepts and describe how a SGM can assist a staff in
developing plans and orders through the application of operational art and
operational design focusing on end, ways and means in conjunction with Joint
Planning Process (JPP). Do not simply define what operational art and design
is. The essay must address concepts and theories and the applicability from
a Sergeant Major's perspective in the planning process. Include accurate and
relevant examples to demonstrate your mastery and knowledge of the material.
