Modifying toys and the environment for young children offers many different benefits. Teachers modify toys and materials for a variety of reasons, including for safety reasons, visual appeal, and to create new and exciting learning experiences for young children. As a teacher who works with children who have disabilities, you may be required to modify a toy or other material simply so that a child can play with it.

This activity asks you to read a particular profile of a child and then based upon that information, plan modifications, identify strengths, and investigate the needs of the child. While you are doing this activity, you will be practicing critical thinking skills, connecting your teaching and learning and growing as a professional.

This assignment fulfills:

  • Module Outcome 1: You will have examined observation skills, developmental screening, and formative assessment.
  • Student Learning Outcome 1: You will have differentiated instructional needs of children (i.e. adapt environment, curricula, etc.) with exceptionalities and diverse abilities using formative assessment (NAEYC 1a, 1b).

You will be review two children’s profiles and answer the questions listed for each scenario. You should complete some research, possibly including professional journals, books, textbooks, and web pages, for different recommendations and information to assist you in answering the questions. You should keep a careful record of sources you are using as you respond. You will be asked to create a reference list as part of this assignment.

  1. First, read each of the child profiles.

Ty is three years old and is very shy. He rarely initiates conversations or plays with other children. One day during center time you notice that Ty is standing just outside of the block center, watching Calvin and Rion build spaceships. He is smiling at them; however, Calvin and Rion don’t seem to notice Ty.

Kit is three years old and has Down syndrome. She seems to understand what is said to her but has difficulty talking. When she does speak, sometimes it is difficult to understand her. Kit enjoys playing on the playground. During free play, Kit goes over to the sandbox where Simon and Gracie are playing. She takes a cup from Simon and begins dipping it in the sand. Simon grabs the cup back and screams “No, that’s mine!” Kit pushes Simon and they both begin to cry.

  1. Answer the following questions for each child, using objective details from the profiles.
    1. What are the potential strengths of this child?
    2. What are some potential areas of need for this child?
  2. What other specific questions do you have about the child that would help you better assist them?
  3. Identify at least one developmental area that you think the child would benefit from working on. Provide the justification.
  4. What are three possible modifications or interventions that you could use to assist this child in the classroom?
  5. Describe how ongoing progress of development and modifications will be monitored.
  6. Provide a list of the sources that you used to support your responses. You should have used at least two sources.
  • Put your name, course and section number, and assignment title at the top of the document.
  • Use 1-inch margins
  • Use a 12-point Times New Roman font.
  • Use double spacing in the document.
  • Write your responses in numeric order with the child’s name at the start of the page.
  • Use APA documentation style to cite sources used within the written response and to create a bibliography, reference, or works cited list.
