You are a new probation officer and you have a single mother on your caseload. This client is on probation for minor drug offenses and shoplifting. She has three young children (all three under 5) and her oldest son was diagnosed with severe autism which causes him to be non-verbal. She receives no support from her ex-husband who was extremely abusive towards her and the children during their marriage. She has no support from her parents. Her mother believes your client is "getting what she deserves and that God is punishing her." The client works in a strip club as an exotic dancer but hates her job. She continues to work in the club because she has trouble finding steady employment, due to her criminal record, and she needs to pay bills including therapy appointments for her son with autism. You discover that she has been smoking marijuana to deal with stress, which is an obvious violation of her probation conditions. You know that if you file a violation report on her, she will face a term of incarceration and that her children could be placed in foster care. From what you know she is a great mother: she is actively involved in her children's lives, she takes great care of them, and they are strongly bonded to her.

1. What would you do? File a violation report or overlook her violation?
