In this module we will examine the Plan of Chicago of 1909 and it's impact on Chicago architecture and urbanism in the interwar period (1918-1930). We will then turn toward the second world's fair in Chicago, The Century of Progress (1933-1934) and it's role in developing ideas about modernity in the US through architectural design. We will finish the module by surveying the way European emigres particularly the German architect Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe changed the architectural landscape of the city by seeding European modernism on US soil as both a practicing architect and the dean of the Architecture Department at the Illinois Insitute of Technology (previously, the Armour Insitute)In this module we will examine the Plan of Chicago of 1909 and it's impact on Chicago architecture and urbanism in the interwar period (1918-1930).
