Read what Bellah says about the essay in his introduction, as I explained today, and then study the essay itself. Then answer this question: "Is Durkheim's understanding of the alleged duality in human character a useful way of looking at today's world? Explain briefly what he thinks, and then give an example or two of how it works or does not work today."
