Chapter 1: (5pages) THE ORIGIN OF OUR FRIENDSHIP: The beginning (how it started)…Explain
briefly why you chose this particular friendship for this project. Then: Write the story of your first
encounter(s)/how and where you met, and how you became friends subsequent to those first
encounters. Why are you friends? How? Include a brief reflection at the end that ties the dynamics of
your friendship to the literature on friendship that we have been reading/studying.
This DRAFT can serve as the opening of the longer Chapter 1 of your book, by setting the stage for a more extended opening narrative about the early days of this friendship (how you became friends, where, why, when, what kinds of things you did together, and so on), followed by a brief reflection on the specific dynamics of the friendship (link to the readings/class lectures). Later, this DRAFT will be converted into Chapter 1 of your book, which will include: The story of your first encounter (how you met), and how you became friends subsequent to that meeting, perhaps some adventures or other shared experiences early on that sealed your bond, and so on.
Work in as much detail about your friend as possible (physical and personality and psychological characteristics, attitudes, ways of talking and acting, etc.) that will SHOW your reader who your friend is. You will also want to reveal such details about yourself, and about the friendship—show your reader what you are like together, what kind of dialogue and action you engage in, and so on. There is nothing quite like action and dialogue to reveal character, so do treat this as an opportunity to craft a vivid and detailed and evocative story that will show your “friendship world” to readers who do not know it from the inside. After crafting the full narrative, include a brief (scholarly) reflection section at the end that ties the dynamics of your friendship to the literature on friendship that we have been reading.
Chapter 2: ( 5 pages) THE MIDDLE CHAPTER OF OUR FRIENDSHIP: This is the middle part—the part
that comes after the early formation of the friendship (where we’ve been, from the beginning to
now)…Write the story of how your friendship progressed or changed over time, focusing some
attention on an event or events (Adventure? Conflict? Shared challenge or tragedy?) that you think
shaped your friendship in some important way. How did you “bond” as friends? Have you faced
adventures, obstacles, or challenges that somehow pushed your friendship to a new level? What
communication patterns began to emerge that assisted (or thwarted) the development of your
friendship? How did you respond? Include a brief reflection at the end that ties the dynamics of your
friendship to the literature on friendship that we have been reading/studying.
