Examples of Op-eds – question 1, just choose one
Tutorial: Choosing a Research Paper Topic – question 5
——————————–
- Open the link “Examples of Op-eds” choose one of the options and then read one Op-ed. You should have a lot of different topics to choose from, so pick something that interested you. What was your reaction to the piece you read? Did they make a good argument? Did they use evidence to back up their opinion?
- When it comes to defining a social problem, what is the difference between objective and subjective approaches? How does this tie to the idea of social constructionism?
- Why is it important to consider/use social theory to understand/frame a social problem? How might different theoretical approaches understand a problem differently? Use an example from the reading.
- In your project this semester you will not only be proposing a solution to a social problem, but you will also be discussing the ways that you can measure whether your solution worked or not. How may the research approaches discussed in section 1.4 help you measure the effectiveness/outcomes of your proposed solution? Use specific examples from the reading.
- Take some time to think about what social problem (I chose racism) you are going to research in this course. While you do not have to decide for certain this week, the sooner the better. Engage the guidance in the Overview and Course Materials section. Choose one technique from the Choosing a Research Topic Video (Mind mapping, 5w's, or pre-writing) and do it. Share the results here (you can take a picture of the mind map if you want to draw it. Otherwise share the answer to the 5 w's or your pre-write in your journal).
