Use Google to find a multimodal text (e.g., a website, a meme, a hyperlinked infographic, video, etc.) and rhetorically analyze it to see how audience, purpose, media, and design come together to create the text’s rhetorical situation:

  1. Audience: Who is the intended audience? Who are the secondary audience(s)? What values or opinions do the primary and secondary audience hold? How does the author appeal to these values or opinions?
  2. Purpose: What is the overall intention of the text? What leads you to this conclusion? Are there secondary intentions? Why do you think so?
  3. Media: What is the primary medium (print, Web, video, etc.)? What secondary media were used? Are these media appropriate for the target audience and purpose? Why and how?
  4. Design: What elements did you see first? Last? How do these elements contribute to the achieving the text’s purpose? How to do color and contrast contribute to the achievement of purpose? How and why are elements positioned in relation to each other?
