Topic/ research question: How does lack of funding impact the success of high school students in low income areas?
Develop an annotated bibliography of sources on this topic with the central purpose being to help you hone your research topic into an empirical research question. Carefully obtain a minimum of 3 social science research articles or reports on the topic. At least three articles must be based on qualitative field research.
Your annotated bibliography describes the articles you have located. It includes a very short descriptive paragraph (your notes about the article in your own words) on each of the minimum of SIX sources you have obtained related to your topic. These sources should be published within the last ten (preferably five) years. For the annotated bibliography, each citation is followed by a concise descriptive and evaluative paragraph (approximately 150 words) called the annotation. The purpose of the annotated bibliography is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources on your list, but, more importantly, it is also used for you to keep a summary of the most important research details that can help you build your own research proposal.
Each of the minimum of 3 annotated bibliography entries should include:
- A full citation in American Sociological Association (Links to an external site.) (ASA) or American Psychological Association (Links to an external site.) (APA) format (depending on your discipline) that includes the author, date, title, and the full publication information.
- An annotation of no less than 150 words that
- Describes the research question, theoretical framework, and general methodological design of the study,
- Gives a brief, critical analysis of the quality (strengths and weaknesses) of the particular empirical methods (e.g. survey, interview, text analysis, etc.) in this study.
- Summarizes the significant findings and substantive conclusions of the study, especially those that relate to YOUR research question, and

Bell, C., & Holder, M. (2019, January/February). The Interrelationship between Race, Social Norms, and Dietary Behaviors among College-attending Women. American Journal of Health Behavior, 43(1), 23-36.
This article examines a study conducted to compare racial identity and dietary habits of women on college campuses. Their research questions were, “Do social norms mediate race differences in dietary behaviors” and “Does mediation vary by social distance of norm referent group (proximal versus distal other) and social norm type (descriptive versus injunctive).” The authors used quantitative data from the Healthy Friends Network Study (a pilot study of women attending a southern university). A recruitment email was sent to 10,241 students with a study sample of 1499 responses. The data they culled from this source included dietary behaviors, social norms, and self-identified race. The findings of the study found that women with perceived differences and social/family norms were more likely to develop unhealthy dietary habits in college, most specifically related to fruit and vegetable consumption. This resource is useful because it examines self-perception of race and how that can impact behavior in ways that influence one's health in the future. This source is useful for our research proposal because as it has specific measures for dietary behaviors and social norms that we may use. The research article includes specific questions we may want to use for our pilot survey, or perhaps for our set of interview questions. Our responses can then be compared to their results.
